Dreaming

‘Are you ever going to get dressed?’ Elli looked down at me. I was lying on my bed in the apartment, wrapped in a thin, white towel that was a little bit like cardboard, and I could feel heat resonating from my shoulders where the sun had left its memory of the day.

‘Nope.’

‘Come on, Alice. I’m bloody starving after today. Get your arse off the bed and get dressed,’ Lottie said and plonked herself down on her bed to look over me. Reluctantly, I agreed. Nico wasn’t working that evening and we planned to have a quiet and early night.

Of course, that’s not what happened. Yes, I got up, dressed, we went out for food, but then we found ourselves drinking shots of ouzo with three ladies in their fifties who had been coming to the same place on holiday together for twenty years. They got us up dancing, telling us about everywhere to eat and drink – which was basically that everywhere was good. If we wanted to do any fabulous excursions, we should chat to San Stefano Travel where we could book lots of amazing things. One of which was boat trips: that went straight to the top of our to-do list for the morning. We shared all about our day snorkelling and exploring, and they decided that would be added to their list for the week.

‘I think we’re you lot in thirty years,’ one of them laughed. I can’t remember their names now. Only that we all laughed so much we cried and they had more energy than any of us. I hoped we would be like them in thirty years. Nothing would make me happier.

They all did shots and one of the trio announced it was time to dance again. In a whirl of floral skirts and painted lips, everyone was laughing and dancing. In my warm haze, holding hands with Elli shouting along to some music in the bar, I couldn’t help but think of the moment Nico had placed his hand on my knee on the ride home. With the heat of the night, I could almost feel his fingers still lingering on me. Excusing myself, I went back to our table and slowly sipped at my drink.

I closed my eyes for a brief moment as a cool breeze rippled past. I couldn’t really explain my attraction to him, other than the fact he was good-looking. It didn’t feel that shallow though. I was sure there was more to discover, but I didn’t know it. With Ethan, I knew he was smart as well as handsome. He had always been polite to me, holding doors open and such. Yes, there was the initial attraction aside from anything else, but with Nico, my first thought was how rude he was, so it seemed mad for me to like him so much. At least I had a little more understanding as to why he overreacted. If it had been my first day of work and someone had nearly made me come off a bike, I’d have probably been exactly the same.
